Singapore, 31 May 2017 – Singapore’s Gateway Theatre, a 9-storey creative arts space in Bukit Merah, will celebrate its official opening from the weekend of 7 July through to 9 July 2017. The festival brings together local artists in order to showcase their creative talents and seeks to inspire and capture the public’s imagination through various forms of art.

The Opening Festival has a line-up of fun and engaging performances and activities in the building’s various creative arts spaces that promises an exciting weekend for everyone. Highlights over the festival weekend include theatrical performances Hansel and Gretel by Players Theatre and Attack of the Swordfish by Act 3 Theatrics. Enjoy a stand-up comedy set by husband and wife pair Rishi and Sharul that is guaranteed to tickle your funny bone.

Head over to the Black Box where you can witness the nostalgia and beauty of a dance performance titled ‘As it Fades’ by T.H.E Dance Company. Singapore-based jazz, neo-vintage band, The Steve McQueens will rock out funky tunes at the Sky Garden. Several dance workshops and a puppet-making workshop have also been specially arranged for kids over the weekend. A photography exhibition by photo-journalist Jorg Sundermann will be on display at the Vertical Gallery throughout the festival. In addition, popular local films such as Army Daze, Long Long Time Ago and the award-winning Ilo Ilo will be exclusively showcased at Gateway’s Black Box.

Samantha Scott-Blackhall, Artistic Director for Gateway Theatre’s Opening Festival explained, “Gateway Theatre hopes to cater to artists who are in need of a working and presentation space. The Theatre intends to be a creative work space that will attract and inspire artists, as well as new and seasoned audiences. We want to encourage artists to explore their creativity, and allow the public to explore their imagination.”

Designed by architectural firm Ong & Ong, the building’s exterior boasts a sleek and modern architectural design. When you begin to explore the interior you discover many little garden spaces that contribute towards the architects overall idea to make this building a “green” space.

“These garden spaces were designed to allow “relief” spaces where one can sit and think, contemplate or create. It also provides a more enlarged impression of space. Another key feature of the building is its maze-like quality leading you to the various arts spaces. Like Alice in Wonderland, the space becomes a place of discovery and surprise. The corridors lead you to a network of unconventional art spaces everywhere you turn.” said Samantha.

Gateway Theatre Opening Festival will run from 7 July – 9 July 2017, 10am-1130pm daily. Gateway Theatre is located at 3615 Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore 159461.
